This course aims to give an introduction to the R package INLA, which provides a simple way to perform approximate Bayesian inference for latent Gaussian models (LGMs). LGMs represent an important model-abstraction for Bayesian inference and include a large proportion of the statistical models used today: most generalized linear mixed models, generalised additive models, smoothing spline models, linear, semiparametric regression, log-Gaussian Cox processes and more. Combined with the Stochastic Partial Differential Equation approach (SPDE), one can accommodate all kinds of geographically referenced data, including areal and geostatistical ones, as well as spatial point process data.

The implementation interface covers stationary spatial models, non-stationary spatial models, and also spatio-temporal models, and is applicable in epidemiology, ecology, environmental risk assessment, as well as general geostatistics.
