Culinary texts require tasteful translations As translators, we have to deal with all imaginable sorts of translation. Any written text is likely to be translated, including restaurant menus. We have all eaten in places where their menus are translated into another language or even into several languages. We usually read them looking for tasty food, but as language professionals, we also detect typos and errors, many of them funny, others annoying. The Internet is full of pictures of inedible culinary translations, but what is the reason for this? What are the difficulties of translating texts in a gastronomic context? Do we have to enjoy our food in order to be good translators? Or shall we just call a “dish a dish”? The paper will focus – among others things – on different problems that menus present for the translator and will propose solutions in order to achieve the ultimate goal: to let diners know what they are ordering and what they are eating. Apart from restaurant menus, the paper will also deal with some particularities of other food-related texts such as cookbooks or recipes. Although the real examples cited come from translations from Spanish into German, in most cases it will be possible to draw conclusions applicable to other language combinations.
